Q. What hardware configuration is required to run Dattaca?
A. Dattaca is a client-server system. It requires a server to host the database and client PCs to do processing and display information. The simplest system requires one PC to act as both client and server. This configuration allows access for only one user. A typical system consists of a server connected to multiple client PCs by an ethernet network.

Q. What operating systems does Dattaca run on?
A. Dattaca runs on Windows 95/98/NT. For a small system with a few clients, both server and clients can run on Windows 98. For a system with more than a handful of clients, we recommend running the server on a Windows NT Server. In the future, we plan to port the Dattaca server to Linux.

Q. What type of network does Dattaca require?
A. For a local area network, Dattaca can use either ethernet or token ring. Ethernet is easier to work with, so that's what we recommend. For a wide area network, Dattaca can use a virtual private network or the internet.

Q. What network protocol does Dattaca use?
A. Dattaca uses TCP/IP to communicate between server and clients. It can coexist with Windows network, Novell and Appletalk.

Q. We have Macintoshes. Can Dattaca run on Macintoshes?
A. Not directly, but we can use the thin client technology to make the Macs run Windows sessions. It will protect your investment in Macs.

Q. How many users can Dattaca support simultaneously?
A. In theory, Dattaca can support millions of users. In practice, it is limited by network bandwidth, server memory and processing power. If you have a sophisticated 100 mbps network and a server that has eight 800 MHz Pentium III processors and 16 Gbyte RAM, it is reasonable to expect Dattaca to support one thousand users. Beyond a thousand users, it is likely that an Oracle database engine, gigabit network and more powerful server are required.

Q. How many user companies and offices can Dattaca support?
A. Dattaca can support 36 companies and 36 offices without modification. With a slight modification, it can support over a thousand companies and a thousand offices.

Q. What database engine is Dattaca based on, and what kind of database engine is it?
A. Dattaca uses Interbase as its database engine. It is a relational database engine. It is used by many companies, big and small. If you want to learn more about Interbase, go to the external link page and follow the link to the Interbase website.

Q. Can Dattaca use a database engine other than Interbase?
A. Yes. Dattaca uses an industry compliant open database driver (ODBC) to interface to the database engine. It can adapt to different database engines, but it will involve some work.

Q. What programming language is Dattaca developed on?
A. We use Delphi to develop Dattaca. Delphi is a programming environment that contains a complete set of tools for developing database oriented applications. It is one of the most popular application development environments, used by thousands of programmers world wide. If you want to learn more about Delphi, go to the external link page and follow the link to the Inprise website.
